Das originale Bild wurde ca. 1990, kurz nach dem Fall der Mauer gezeichnet. Die Euphorie über die Beseitigung einer mörderischen Grenze war überall spürbar. Das Bild war von dieser Atmosphäre getragen.2020, als ich das Bild nach Jahrzehnten Vergessenheit heraus kramte, entschied ich mich für eine Nachbearbeitung. Zwar stand die Komposition in ihren wesentlichen Zügen fest. Jedoch fehlte die obere linke Seite weitgehend und, fast überall, die Farben. Vor allem die farbliche Überarbeitung betont die Freude und den Optimismus, die mich damals in Berlin so beeindruckte.
Zwar sind die Ergebnisse der "Wiedervereinigung" ein großartiges Zeugnis der Stärke und der dynamischen Kraft Deutschlands. Auf der anderen Seite beschäftigen die Eigenheiten des Ost-Deutschen Teils - auch nach dreißig Jahren - die Medien intensiv. Die politischen Entwicklungen in den Neuen Bundesländern sind mir Anlass zur Sorge. Die Entgleisung eines - nicht-vernachlässigbaren - Teils der dortigen Bevölkerung und des Staatapparats in völkisch-identitäre Ideologien bringt seltsame Blüten hervor: schwer-ertragbare Blindheit für Straftaten im rechtsextremistischen Milieu, Anfälligkeit für abstruse Verschwörungstheorien, Dämonisierung der Kanzlerin, Frau Merkel, Verklärung der auf Deutschem Boden entstandenen Diktaturen, etc.
Ein Teil der Probleme ist aus Missverständnissen in Bezug auf Definition und Funktionieren einer Demokratie West-Europäischer Prägung zurückzuführen. Geschichtlich betrachtet ist es nicht wunderlich. Das alltägliche Leben in den Volksrepubliken Ost-Europas war "exotischer", als manche Politiker im Westen es wahrhaben wollten.
Ich bin davon überzeugt, dass trotz der politischen Wirbel - die teilweise von unabhängigen Umständen, wie die Corona-Pandemie, verstärkt sind - das gesamte Land fest in der toleranten, pluralistischen, geistig-liberalen, sozialen, demokratischen Tradition verwurzelt ist und bleiben wird: Die Wiedervereinigung ist ein positives Zeichen in der Geschichte Europas.
[EN] Berlin Wall The original picture was drawn in Berlin in ca. 1990, shortly after the fall of the Berliner Wall. The dismantlement of this murderous border was generally acclaimed. A optimistic atmosphere was everywhere perceptible.
2020 I retrieved the drawing and decided to finish it. The main structure and elements were already in place. However, the left upper side was an open void. More importantly, colors were missing almost everywhere. Especially, the colors convey the feeling of joy and confidence that stroke me at that time.
The results of the "Reunification" are a tangible prove of the strength and dynamism of Germany. On the other side, certain peculiarities of the eastern part - after thirty years - still preoccupy the media. The political derailment of a non negligible part of the population and - even worst - of the state apparatus toward populist-identitary ideologies produces odd blossoms: arguable blindness toward crimes committed by members of extreme right fractions, vulnerability to conspiracy theories, demonisation of the chancellor, Mrs. Merkel, positivation of the dictatorships that operated on German territories, etc.
Part of the problems is due to misunderstandings as for the definition and function of a democratic system in western Europe. From the historical point of view, it is not so surprising. The daily life in the People's Republics of eastern Europe was much more "exotic" as western politicians were ready to acknowledge.
I am convinced that in spite of the political turmoils - that are amplified by independent factors, like the COVID-19 pandemic - the country as a whole is strongly rooted into the tolerant, pluralistic, intellectual-liberal, social, democratic tradition and will stay so. The reunification was and is a positive symbol of the European history.
[FR] Le mur de Berlin La version originale fut dessinée vers 1990, peu après la chute du mur de Berlin. L'euphorie générale provoquée par le démantèlement de cette frontière meurtrière est directement perceptible. La composition vibre d'optimisme.
En 2020, après la redécouverte du dessin, je décidai de le compléter. Certes, le structure générale de la composition était déjà en place. Mais, la partie en haut à gauche était pratiquement vide. Et surtout, les couleurs manquaient presque partout. Ce sont elles qui renforcent le côté joyeux et serein, qui m'avait alors frappé à Berlin.
Les résultats de la "Réunification" sont une preuve magnifique de la force et du dynamisme de l'Allemagne. Cependant, même après trente ans, certaines différences entre l'est et l'ouest continuent de préoccuper les médias. En particulier, certaines tendances politiques dans les nouveaux Länder posent des questions troublantes. La dérive d'une partie non négligeable de la population et - plus grave encore - de l'appareil étatique vers des idéologies populistes-identitaires produit des fruits bizarres: une cécité inquiétante à l'encontre des délits commis par des sympathisants d'extrême droite, une réception et propagation accrue des théories de complots les plus ébouriffées, la démonisation de la chancelière Mme Merkel, la ré-interprétation "positivisante" des dictatures qui sévirent dans l'espace culturel allemand, etc.
Une partie des problèmes vient de malentendus concernant définition et fonctionnement des démocraties en Europe de l'ouest. D'un point de vue historique, c'est tout à fait compréhensible: Le vécu des Démocraties Populaires de l'est européen était beaucoup plus "exotique" que les politiciens de l'ouest voulait bien se l'avouer.
En dépit des difficultés actuelles - intensifiées par des circonstances indépendantes, comme la pandémie du COVID-19 - je reste convaincu que le pays dans son entier est bien enraciné dans la tradition pluraliste, intellectuelle-libérale, sociale, démocratique et le restera: La réunification du pays est un signe positif dans l'histoire du continent européen.
